City overview

Sesto Fiorentino is a city located in the North West of Tuscany, very close to Florence, with approximately 47.000 inhabitants.

Sesto lies in a large region which includes the massif of Monte Morello which is almost 900 metres high. The very interesting mountain area is covered by woods, perfect for hiking and where you can admire the wonderful views of Sesto and Florence. Coming down from the hill the landscape changes: the woods fade out leaving space for olive trees whose extra virgin olive oil is one of the most appreciated typical products of Sesto.

Sesto has expanded its urban framework within the huge plain between Florence and Prato to the slopes of Monte Morello.
At one time Sesto was a rural town surrounded by country side; today it’s an important economic centre with many business enterprises working in the sectors of high quality handmade furniture, fashion and technology. Moreover Sesto has a great number of shops, especially in the historical centre, which are able to satisfy all of the customers’ requirements.
The transformation began in the XVIIIth century when Richard Ginori manufacturing was founded, and it’s strictly linked with the development of this factory, one of the most prestigious and well-known factories in the world. Visiting the Richard Ginori museum, one of the most popular tourist destination in the city, is an excellent way to learn about the history of this manufacturing company.

Sesto is an exciting cultural city and home to some Institutes of the National Council of Research where you can find the Polo Scientific Institute of the University of Florence, with some international research laboratories. The scientific research and technological innovations provide new opportunities for the future of this city which also invests energy and resources in preserving its history.

There are many places to stay in Sesto: traditional hotels in the residential area (some of which are based in historical buildings) farmhouses and B&B establishments, especially based in the hills, which allows one to stay close to nature and very near to the city.
